Driven by our vision of a world where all people have viable livelihoods supported by healthy and productive landscapes, our global team of science, research, development, institutional and resource professionals seeks to better combine the science of discovery with the science of delivery. To realize this vision, we focus on four key interacting themes: By combining more productive trees with more resilient and profitable agricultural systems and a sounder understanding of the health of the soil, land and people that is part of ‘greener’, better governed landscapes, we offer valuable and timely knowledge products and services to the global community as it tackles the major challenges of the Anthropocene. These include dealing with climate change; low soil carbon; widespread forest, tree and soil loss leading to degradation; poverty; demographic upheavals and conflict; and securing equitable futures for all with a special focus on women and children.

"SMART: Catalyzing knowledge for the development of agroforestry in the San Martin Region"

The SMART initiative is a collaborative articulation, which seeks to catalyze knowledge for the implementation of agroforestry in the San Martin region, contributing to promote sustainable agriculture and the reduction of forest loss.

General objective: promote agroforestry development in the region, generating information that promotes investment, generating opportunities for family farmers and integrating agroforestry into the socioeconomic growth model of the San Martin region.

What do we want to achieve?

  • Co-generate accessible information on agroforestry and tree-based practices.
  • Support with information, technical assistance, and extension under the principles of co-creation of knowledge and co-learning.
  • Co-design and provide feedback on the implementation and evaluation of tree-based practices for restoration.
  • Support policy and governance innovation that promotes agroforestry and inclusive business.

How do we want to achieve this?

By supporting the establishment and operation of a Regional Agroforestry Platform and the construction of an action plan to guide the implementation of the regional agroforestry agenda. The process of building and operationalizing the SMART initiative is based on the principles of engagement and co-design, which will be implemented through an inclusive and evidence-based approach, called SHARED, which is based on the principle of fostering evidence-based planning, decision-making and implementation to guide the development of structured participatory processes.

graph_SMART-process

Medium-term smart actions

  • Legitimization and endorsement of the initiative: presentation of the SMART to the Regional Government authorities and construction of the initiative's institutional framework.
  • Formation of the Driving Group: group that builds the vision and defines the SMART guidelines, initially including the Regional Government Authorities, Private Sector, Academia, Civil Society Organizations, Technical Committees and experts.
  • Definition of the guidelines to build the platform: the Driving Group will define the vision for agroforestry development in the region and develop a series of key actions to support the regional agroforestry agenda and the construction of the platform.
  • Identify and share technical-scientific information that supports the implementation of tree-based interventions applying the SHARED approach to identify technical-scientific information to be shared and that required to develop tree-based interventions.
  • Consolidation of the Multi-stakeholder Agroforestry Platform and action plan: based on the progress made by the driving group, the other stakeholders will complete the consolidation of the platform and action plan through a participatory construction process.

Smart includes multiple stakeholders with different levels of articulation

  • Regional
  • Private Sector
  • Civil Society
  • Agricultural cooperatives and organizations
  • Farmer and native communities
  • Certifiers
  • Financial actors
  • Research institutions
  • Conservation and CC actors

  • Regional
  • Sector Privado
  • Sociedad Civil
  • Cooperaciones y organizaciones de agricultura
  • Comunidades campesinas y nativas
  • Certificadores
  • Actores financieros
  • Instituciones de investigación
  • Actores de conservación y CC.
