ICRAF lends support to Philippines biodiversity project
The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)
is one of four international agencies behind a new project to address key
issues affecting biodiversity conservation around the Mt. Malindang area in
Mindanao, the Philippines.
The project, ‘Ridge to Reef: An
Ecosystem-based Approach to Biodiversity Conservation and Development in the
Philippines’, centres on Mt Malindang, a biodiversity hotspot, which has been
identified as an extremely high priority conservation area under the Philippines
National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan.
The project aims to reverse
degradation of coastal resources, enhance livelihoods of local people and build
capacity in information management. Among other things, ICRAF will provide research
expertise in reducing the downstream impact of agriculture and forestry on
coastal aquatic ecosystems.
Project partners are the Southeast
Asian Ministers of Education Organization – Science and Education for Agricultural
Development (SEAMEO SEARCA), the World Fish Center and the project funders, United
States Agency for International Development.
